Breast Reduction
Breast reduction is the surgical removal of excess weight in the breast. Also known as a mammoplasty, it is beneficial for women with overly large breasts and is seeking to reduce the size due to health issues or personal preference. Often once reduction has been done, women experience a more lifted appearance. In some cases, patients may also opt to reduce the size of their areolas for more symmetry and a balanced look.
Surgically removing excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breast. If you have a large breast, you might choose to have breast reduction surgery to ease discomfort or achieve a more proportionate breast size. The procedure might include the use of incisions and/or liposuction technique.
To prepare, do disclose your full medical history and overall health conditions. Speak to your doctor about your goals. You will need to get a thorough examination of your breast including a lab test and mammogram. You might need to avoid certain medications and herbs. Stop smoking before your surgery.
The surgery is typically done under general anesthesia.
During the surgery, the surgeon will make an incision around the areola and down the breast. Remove excess tissue, fat, and skin that reduces the size. Followed by a reshaping of the breast and repositioning of the nipple and areola. The nipple and areola will typically remain attached but in some cases may need to remove and reattach to a higher position for a very large breast and may need to reduce its size.
Expect to feel some tenderness and sensitive. Swelling and bruising might occur and you may need to wear a compression bra for healing.
Do follow aftercare instructions carefully. You will need to limited physical activity for up to a month and avoid wearing underwire bras for several months.
You will require a follow up appointment to remove stitches and ensure healing is on track
The result can be seen almost immediately however, it may take months till swelling completely heals. Allow time for surgical scars to fade. The final results are permanent although breast shape and size can vary due to changes in weight and the natural aging process.
Side effects include:
Bruising, usually temporary
Scar
Removal of or loss of sensation in the nipples and skin surrounding the nipple
Difficulty or inability to breast-feed
Differences in the size, shape and symmetry which might lead to further surgery to improve your appearance
